Ski Claim News: Half of British skiers without adequate insurance
Wednesday, 10 March 2010 15:36

The Ski Club of Great Britain has warned that more than half of the skiers this season will take to the slopes without insurance.

SkiClaim01Whilst the vast majority of skiers are able to enjoy incident free holidays, sporting holidays such as ski trips do have risks and accidents abroad do happen. But when they do they can be both expensive and serious.

According to World First Travel Insurance, the average claim for medical expenses for skiing related injuries was £684. In the 2008-2009 ski season the association of mountain Doctors in France report that they dealt with 140,000 injuries relating to skiing and snowboarding.

Over 16,000 were treated after suffering collisions on the slopes, the most common injury being a sprained knee with over 15,500 severe cases such as a ruptured ligament, mostly caused by a lack of physical preparation and badly adjusted boots.

You are twice as likely to suffer and accident on the slopes if you are a beginner, while 50% of women and 22% of men injured had seven days practice or less.

Such statistics provide food for thought coming shortly after the reports that only 42% of skiers are willing to wear a helmet and that half a million Brits are likely to drink and ski.

It is crucial that you have the right and proper insurance if you are going on a skiing holiday.
