A Butlins holiday camp in Bognor Regis, West Sussex has been affected by an outbreak of the highly contagious norovirus. Reports suggest that at least 200 people have been struck down with the sickness and diarrhoea bug in the last few days.
The resort which can have more than 5,000 guests and staff on site at any one time has been undergoing a full deep cleaning exercise.
Management at Butlins have confirmed the outbreak of the virus and are offering holidaymakers the chance to switch to either their Minehead or Skegness sites. It's not clear at this stage what reaction they have had, or how many people are taking them up on the offer. A spokesperson said:
"Most of those affected have left. Guests worried about travel to the resort should be reassured that we have stepped up procedures for cleaning and sanitising"
This is just one of several high profile outbreaks of norovirus to be reported in recent times. Reports coming out of the USA suggest that The Princess Cruises vessel the Sea Princess has been affected as recently as last week. It's not yet clear what the outcome of that incident will be, or if it will lead people to make holiday compensation claims.
Claiming Compensation After Norovirus at Butlins
Claiming compensation after an outbreak of norovirus like the one at Butlins may be an option. But it requires an expert in dealing with such cases. Nolan Mortimer, solicitor at www.accident-abroad.com commented:
"On most occasions this virus is brought into public places unintentionally. It is difficult to see how Butlins could have prevented the outbreak. The issue that needs to be carefully scrutinised is the extent to which they sanitise the resort and what level of warning they give to holidaymakers due to arrive.
Norovirus can be especially dangerous for the more vulnerable groups in society such as young chilren and the elderly. For that reason it is important that holidaymakers who fall into these groups are warned of the risks and they can then make an informed decision on what to do."
