The widow of a holiday maker who died as a result of salmonella poisoning while staying at a hotel in Italy, has called for greater protection for tourists.
A coroner recorded a verdict of misadventure after Geofrey Appleyard, 71, died in 2008 after falling ill at the Grand Hotel in Lake Garda. The coroner said that Mr Appleyard had died from salmonella poisoning contracted at the hotel.
Following the coroners decision, Mr Appleyard’s wife, Jean Appleyard, told the BBC, "Tour operators have to ensure they are doing everything they possibly can to make sure holidaymakers are protected from outbreaks like that."
Though several other people staying in the hotel had fallen ill, tour operator Thomson said that it was confident the outbreak was an isolated case. |
