We recently helped a holidaymaker win £7,000 in compensation for her holiday claim after she fell ill from salmonella while staying at the Houda Golf & Beach Club Hotel in Tunisia. She was struck down with food poisoning on holiday after meals at the hotel had been left uncovered and staff served food including undercooked eggs and chicken.
It should have been a dream holiday for our client but it turned into a nightmare after staying at the all-inclusive, 3-star resort and hotel in Skanes, Tunisia. Our client was enjoying a relaxing holiday, taking advantage of the facilities and eating meals at the hotel, but after a few days she and other guests staying at the hotel – including members of her party – began to feel ill. They were all found to have contracted gastroenteritis around the same time from food poisoning at the hotel.
Runny Eggs and Salmonella Outbreak
Breakfast at the hotel included cooked breakfasts with omelettes and undercooked fried eggs cooked on a griddle and served very runny. There were also chicken dishes and other meals including eggs that could have caused the Salmonella outbreak.
As well as eggs and chicken, it was also found that food including salad, vegetables, pizza and sandwiches were often left uncovered for long periods of time, leaving the food to attract flies. Staff at the hotel often also did not wear gloves when serving food to guests.
After returning from her holiday our client continued to suffer from gastroenteritis including nausea, fainting, abdominal pain and cramps. It was so bad that she continued to suffer from irritable bowel syndrome for weeks after the she had returned home from holiday.
We helped her make a claim for compensation against the tour operator because of the breaches in food hygiene that led to her falling ill. After making a claim against the travel company who supplied the package holiday, we won her £7,000 compensation for her illness and related expenses.
